Let me explain why I flinched when you told me you were demon hunters. See, I've dealt with demons before, and two of them were really evil and scary and those I'd have had no issue with seeing gone. But the third one became my friend, or I became his friend, and he really tries, you know? I suppose I was in love with him, too - was, because it's been a year since I last saw him and it's hard to have long distance relationships, let alone do it while the other's not even aware you're somewhere else. But my feelings are irrelevant here - what's important is that there is one boy I care deeply about, and despite what else he may be, he's still just one boy - incredibly dumb, incredibly stubborn, you know how it goes - and if he ever comes here again, I need you not to kill him.

[ After waking up and discovering the message on the device, Jace stares at it for a long time. Clary is asleep beside him, but he doesn't plan on waking her yet, knows how she'll no doubt feel on the matter. But him? He's conflicted; on the one hand, Mae is a friend, now, and killing this demon would no doubt mean losing her, but on the other, one less demon in the world is what he lives on, putting them down is what he was born to do. ]

This demon lover friend of yours, does he attack or kill?

Don't call him demon lover, Jace, that's just - don't. But no, he doesn't. He protects us. Sure, he's not the most sociable of people, but he grew up around them and he has - he cares.

[ A rare apology, but that only enforces how much he means it; he once wouldn't have thought twice about killing him, but after Simon, after Clary, he's a little more open minded. ]

If you trust him, then I trust him. I'll give him the benefit of the doubt if he ever turns up. It's not as if Clary's best friend isn't a vampire and my adoptive brother isn't dating a warlock. [ He's not even going to touch who Isabelle's associating with. ]

Oh. Okay. Vampire, really? Does he sparkle?

I want to say yes, he's definitely light on his feet, and he seems to think he's funny.

Sparkling vampires usually aren't funny. They brood.

He sulks like the spoilt, only-child that he used to be. Does that count?

He also has a thing for Clary.

I'm surprised Clary hasn't told you about him before.

We've grown closer in the past months than previous to that, and Clary is as private as I am.
